Mike Williamson says he’s delighted to have “relentless” former team-mate Luke Armstrong at his disposal at Carlisle United.
The Blues’ new head coach played in the same Gateshead side as Armstrong.
And now he’s in charge of the frontman, who repaid Williamson’s faith by scoring on his first league start of the season at Swindon Town.
Armstrong’s goal clinched a 2-0 win and rewarded the striker for a hard-working display in Williamson’s first game in charge.
“He's relentless in everything he does. I'm really pleased for him,” said Williamson.
Record signing Armstrong has had to be patient this season after being left out of United’s opening six league starting XIs under Paul Simpson and then Carlisle’s caretakers.
Asked what is key to getting the best out of the former Harrogate Town frontman, Williamson said: “To put him on the pitch, I think.
“I think there's many answers to that. Obviously, I think you know what you're going to get, and I think there'll be days where he empties the tank and he hasn’t put the ball in the back of the net, but more often than not, when you're that relentless, you'll always sniff out chances.
“He's got a proven record at this level. His personality and his character is hugely valued and I'm really pleased to have him.
“Luke typifies the heart and the energy he uses every day in training. He was like that when I played with him, and that was in substance all the way through the team.”
Williamson is starting his first full week in charge and said he is looking forward to putting more of his early plans in place.
“There’s lots to address,” the new head coach said.
“It gives us a bit of time on the training ground, a bit of contact time, and that's invaluable.”
The head coach’s first full week at the helm will also see a reserve game, with United hosting Blackburn Rovers at Brunton Park in the Central League Cup tomorrow afternoon.
