Last week brought the beginning of the Mike Williamson era at Carlisle United. The new boss wasted no time in getting his first win on the board with a battling 2-0 win away at Swindon.

This may not have been achieved in the style with which the gaffer has earned his reputation, but the grit and determination shown by the players is an attribute in itself.

Goals from Sam Lavelle and Luke Armstrong either side of half time gave the travelling fans something to cheer on the long trip back from the County Ground.

Repairing the form of the last 12 months will not happen overnight and we as supporters will have to be patient as the new coaching team implement their methods. Playing out from the back has its risks, we will make mistakes and concede goals. However Mike’s 48 per cent win ratio over more than 200 games, shows that it does work.

For many fans this may be their first experience of Carlisle United without Paul Simpson. Those of us a little longer in the tooth have seen many a manager in that dugout. Let's take the opportunity on Saturday to show Mike, Ian, Carl and Chris, Brunton Park at its best, full of bouncing Cumbrians, creating a great atmosphere.

With 39 games still to play, promotion remains the target this season. I’m sure Saturday’s three points will be the first of many gained for this talented squad under the new head coach.
