Cumbrian defender Patrick Brough played on with a broken leg, his manager at Northampton Town has revealed.

The former Carlisle United man, from Silloth, suffered the injury in the Cobblers’ League One victory over Huddersfield Town.

The extent of the injury was later confirmed, with 28-year-old Brough now set for a long spell on the sidelines.

Northampton had used up their available substitutes when Brough – who had come on in the 70th minute – was injured in the closing stages of the Cobblers’ 3-1 win at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Manager Jon Brady, speaking via the Chronicle & Echo, said: "Patrick broke his leg at the weekend.

“He carried on and he stayed out there but he will now be checked by the specialist and he’ll be out for the long-term.

"It’s the mark of the man. He’s all in for the team and he’s an incredible character but it puts the dampener on the result when something like that because he’s a player who is so committed to the group.

"You don’t know in the moment, and we wanted him to come off but he stayed out there and hobbled around and it’s just gutting for us all. We wish him all the best.”

Brough is in his second season at Northampton after joining them from Barrow in the summer of 2023.

Last weekend’s game was his third appearance of the campaign, the Cumbrian having recently returned from another injury.

He has made 44 appearances and scored two goals for Northampton. The left-sided player came through the youth ranks at Carlisle and went on to make 49 first-team appearances for the Blues from 2013 to 2017.

He then had spells at Morecambe, Falkirk and Barrow, spending four years with the latter before earning a move to League One with the Cobblers.

He is one of three ex-Blues on Northampton's books along with Liam McCarron and Jack Sowerby.
