Carlisle United’s hierarchy were today set to brief head coach Mike Williamson on the sporting director search.

The Blues were due to give Williamson an update on the position this afternoon.

United have yet to comment publicly on the latest situation after reports that MK Dons sporting director Liam Sweeting had turned them down.

The Cumbrians want to bring in a sporting director as part of a restructure which has also seen Williamson arrive as head coach.

The new boss was poised to discuss the latest with United’s owners and directors today.

Speaking to the News & Star at today’s press conference, Williamson said: “After this I’ve got a meeting with them [the club hierarchy], so I'm sure we'll be discussing that.

“They're very clear on making sure we get the right person and that might take time.

“There’ll be an update hopefully at some point today or this week.

“They've got a vision of this football club and I know how hard they're working, so hopefully I can come in and support that and we'll work together on it.”

United, it’s understood, had been planning to bring in Sweeting to oversee their football operations.

But he rejected the move to Brunton Park in favour of agreeing a reported new deal at Stadium MK.

Sweeting has subsequently led MK Dons’ recruitment of Scott Lindsey as Williamson’s successor as head coach.

United owner Tom Piatak has made the recruitment of a sport director a key part of the club’s change of approach following the departure of manager Paul Simpson last month.

Speaking three days before Williamson’s appointment, Piatak said the club had made their “choices” for both the sporting director and head coach positions.

Sweeting’s decision, though, has forced United to revisit the former in terms of candidates and the timing of any appointment.

Piatak said the amount of applicants for both positions had been “amazing”.
