Jarrad Branthwaite's return to Premier League action was welcomed after he helped Everton to victory over Crystal Palace.

The defender, back from a groin injury, won the battle of the Cumbrians as his side won 2-1 against visitors who had Dean Henderson in goal.

Branthwaite's return coincided with Everton's first league win of the campaign as two Dwight McNeil goals followed Marc Guehi's Palace opener.

The former Carlisle United man played the full game and afterwards Sean Dyche said Branthwaite, 22, can now build on his comeback outing.

"The first thing is to get him fully fit," said the Everton boss of England international Branthwaite. "He has done well to get to where he was here, delivering a good performance.

"He is still a young player in terms of Premier League games. He's a very talented player."

The top-flight also saw an impressive brace from Liam Delap - son of ex-Carlisle star Rory - in Ipswich Town's 2-2 draw with Aston Villa.

Another son of an ex-Blue was on target in League One, with Sheffield Wednesday loanee Bailey Cadamarteri, son of Danny, scoring Lincoln City's second in their 2-0 win at Cambridge United.

The third tier also saw Kyle Dempsey on target in Bolton Wanderers' 2-0 win at Crawley Town.

In League Two, Paddy Madden converted a penalty in Chesterfield's 3-0 win at Doncaster Rovers, who had Tom Anderson and Luke Molyneux sent off.

The National League brought a goal for Micah Obiero as Wealdstone drew 2-2 at FC Halifax Town.

In Northern League Division One there were mixed fortunes for the former United men in management.

Dan Kirkup's Carlisle City drew 1-1 at home with West Auckland Town, Keighran Kerr on target for City who sit tenth.

Darren Edmondson's 14th-placed Penrith went down to a 4-0 defeat at high-flying Blyth Town.

Former United youth player Jason Blackburn got two as Guisborough Town defeated Whitley Bay 3-2 in the same division.

In the Scottish Premiership, Motherwell's Lennon Miller - son of former United striker Lee - scored twice to earn a 2-1 home win over St Mirren.

Tom Lawrence struck the only goal as Rangers claimed a 1-0 win over Hibernian at Ibrox.

In Scottish League One, Peter Murphy has led Queen of the South to the top of the table following a 2-0 home win over Dumbarton.

None of Carlisle United's loan players were in action this weekend, with Aran Fitzpatrick and Jake Allan not used by Workington Reds in their 5-0 Fred Conway Cumberland Cup victory at Mirehouse, and Josh O'Brien still ruled out with injury for Carlisle City.
