Carlisle United loanee Aran Fitzpatrick helped Workington Reds march on in the FA Trophy on Saturday.

Fitzpatrick was the only one of the Blues’ young loan players to figure this weekend.

The teenager was in Mark Fell’s starting line-up for their third qualifying round Trophy home clash with Morpeth Town.

Fitzpatrick, 18, played the full game as Reds fought back to win 3-1, second-half goals from Steven Rigg (two) and Jamie Allen earning the Borough Park club a place in the next round.

The young Blues loanee came in for praise afterwards, with Fell, in a club interview, saying: "Aran Fitzpatrick was excellent at left-back.

"I thought he dealt with pretty much everything they threw at him on that side."

Jake Allan was not involved for Workington while fellow teenager Josh O’Brien remains sidelined with injury at Carlisle City.

Dan Kirkup’s 12th-placed City went down to a 3-0 defeat at West Allotment Celtic in Northern League Division One.

Their fellow Northern League side Penrith were in Fred Conway Cumberland Cup action, Darren Edmondson’s side claiming a 4-0 win at Kirkoswald thanks to goals from Connor Hammell (two), Luke Hunter and Martyn Coleman.

A number of other ex-Blues were in the thick of the weekend action, meanwhile.

In the Premier League, Dean Henderson’s latest Crystal Palace outing came in a 1-0 home defeat to Liverpool, Diogo Jota’s early goal the difference.

Liam Delap, son of former Carlisle favourite Rory, was on target again for Ipswich Town but it proved a consolation goal as they went down 4-1 at West Ham United.

In the Championship, James Trafford’s latest clean sheet came in Burnley’s goalless draw at home to Preston North End.

League One saw Jack Marriott chip in with a goal as Wrexham thrashed Northampton Town 4-1.

Also in the third tier, in-form Kyle Dempsey scored his fourth goal in seven games as Bolton Wanderers came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Shrewsbury Town.

In League Two, Joe White scored for the second successive game as MK Dons drew 1-1 with Tranmere Rovers at Stadium MK.

And Jordan Gibson starred with two goals in Doncaster Rovers’ 3-0 win at Grimsby Town.

Ryan Bowman scored in Cumbria but the Carlisle-born striker’s goal for Cheltenham Town proved a consolation in a 2-1 defeat at Barrow.

Morecambe, where Danny Grainger is assistant manager remain, winless after going down 2-1 at fellow strugglers Accrington Stanley.

Both Jayden Harris and Ashley Nadesan were on target but their Sutton United side lost a seven-goal National League thriller as Hartlepool United won 4-3.

In National League North, Needham Market new boy Reggie Lambe scored to clinch a 3-0 win over South Shields.

The Northern Premier League West Division saw a winner for Kelvin Mellor in Nantwich Town’s 2-1 victory at Kidsgrove Athletic.

Veteran defender Simon Grand was Bamber Bridge’s FA Trophy hero, the 40-year-old getting the only goal in a 1-0 win at Guiseley to set up a first round trip to Workington. 

North of the border, it was a bad day for Peter Murphy’s Queen of the South, who suffered a 5-1 home defeat at the hands of Kelty Hearts, with Matty Douglas sent off for Murphy’s men who dropped three places to fourth.

Annan Athletic picked up a much-needed 1-0 home win over Montrose, Max Kilsby and Josh Dixon both playing the full game as Rhys Breen's long-range goal clinched the points.

Also in Scottish League One, Gavin Reilly was Arbroath’s matchwinner in their 1-0 victory over Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

Overseas, meanwhile, Tomas Holy made his debut for new club FK Baník Most-Souš in the Czech third tier.

But it was a losing start for the goalkeeper, whose team went down to a 1-0 defeat at Teplice B.
