Mike Williamson says Carlisle United’s players are showing “bravery” to try to put his instructions into practice in terms of style of play.

The Blues have been aiming to introduce a more passing style since last month’s appointment of head coach Williamson.

In the early days of the new boss’s reign Carlisle have won one, drawn one and lost three in league and cup.

The Cumbrians believe Williamson is the right man to oversee an overhaul of their playing style which can benefit United in the long run.

United’s attempts to pass from the back brought difficulty for a young side for spells of Tuesday’s Bristol Street Motors Trophy defeat to Wigan Athletic.

Williamson, though, said the players’ willingness to take on board his principles is pleasing.

“I'm learning that individual players have got the bravery and the courage to try and do what we're asking them,” he said.

“But not just to do it, to do it and execute it with that belief that they've got.

“And, when they are in those actions, really execute with intensity and understanding.

“All the boys are giving everything they've got and it's only going to help them to develop and to mature, regardless, and that's the learning that everyone's got.”

Williamson’s side head to AFC Wimbledon this weekend for the head coach’s fifth league game in charge.

United have taken four points on the road as they wait for their first home point since Williamson replaced Paul Simpson.

Carlisle believe changing their style of play can have long-term benefits but Williamson says the attitude towards any situation will always be key.

“In the football club, no matter what set of circumstances you're faced with, however the manager is asking you to play, you've just got to give everything to try and improve,” he said.

“Whether it's your game or not, it doesn't really matter.

“If you buy into it wholeheartedly, then you've got the ability to improve and to learn and grow, but you're going to give a good account of yourself and you're going to give yourself every opportunity to be part of it – and that's what I'm seeing.”
