Cumbrian goalkeeper James Trafford tasted victory in his latest England Under-21 outing.

The Burnley No1, from Greysouthen, got his latest cap in the Young Lions' clash with Ukraine on Friday evening,

Trafford and his team-mates staged a comeback as England won 2-1 in the European Championships qualifier at AFC Bournemouth's Vitality Stadium.

The Cumbrian, who turned 22 on Thursday, saw Ukraine take the lead in the 70th minute when Taras Mykhavko headed home a corner.

But Ben Futcher's side claimed a dramatic turnaround with two James McAtee goals.

The Manchester City man netted a free-kick in the 88th minute before firing the winner in added time.

The win kept alive England's hopes of topping their qualification group as visitors Ukraine dropped their first points of the qualifying campaign.

They are second after nine games, two points behind Ukraine, and victory over Azerbaijan next Tuesday at Bristol City's Ashton Gate would see England secure automatic qualification for the 2025 finals in Slovakia if Ukraine fail to beat Serbia.

Should England finish second in Group F, they would still stand a chance of qualification as one of the three best runners-up.

England's line-up on the south coast also included in-form Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap, son of former Carlisle United favourite Rory.

He came close to scoring in the first half.

Former Blues academy keeper Trafford, who has 19 Under-21 caps, has long been established as the U21s' first-choice keeper, having last year played a key role in England's victory at the European Championships.

He kept a clean sheet in every game of the 2023 tournament in Georgia and Romania, which culminated in victory in the final against Spain, when Trafford saved a late penalty to help secure the title for England.

Also in England's age group teams, former Carlisle United striker Paul Nevin led the men's elite league squad (formerly Under-20s) to a 2-1 win in Italy on Thursday.

Darko Gyabi and Max Dean earned the points for England, who next face Czechia in Doncaster on Monday. Interim head coach Nevin played for the Blues in the 1991/92 season.
