Carlisle United have no plans to replace coach Carl Magnay, who left the club this week.

The first-team coach departed after less than a month at Brunton Park in order to become Gateshead’s new manager.

But head coach Mike Williamson says he has no current plans to bring a replacement into his backroom staff.

He believes Magnay’s duties can be adequately covered by the other coaches who are part of his team at United.

Asked why he did not believe replacing Magnay was a priority, the Blues boss told the News & Star: “It’s the dynamics we had before Mags.

“The majority of our coaching journey [at Gateshead and then MK Dons] has been me, Ian [Watson] and Chris [Bell], and Tom Weal has come on board with that.

“These are the dynamics that we're used to working with that's worked really well for us.

“We obviously had the opportunity to bring Mags down – he's a great human being and he brought great detail.

“I'm not saying that he won't be replaced if something comes up and we want to improve – it's like anything, if we can improve we'll want to add that – but at the minute we're more than comfortable.”

Magnay followed Williamson, Bell and Watson from MK Dons to Brunton Park last month.

But the opportunity to take charge at Gateshead, a club where he has previously been player and coach, was an opportunity the 35-year-old felt he could not turn down.

Magnay is set to take charge of his first Heed game this weekend against Altrincham in the National League, on a day Carlisle will be facing Harrogate Town in League Two.

Williamson said Magnay’s departure was amicable and that he did not want to stand in his way when such a managerial opportunity came up.

“I knew there was interest,” added the United head coach.

“Mags has been brilliant. The bottom line is he's a great guy and we obviously thank him for everything that he's done with us.

“It's been a short time but it's a massive opportunity for him and we wish him well.”
