Former Carlisle United striker Cedwyn Scott has taken a temporary break from football to seek help for his mental health.

The forward, who now plays for fellow League Two club Notts County, said he has taken the step after a "difficult" time both professionally and personally.

Scott, 25, issued a statement via Notts County where he said he had received therapy but now needs to seek further help.

His move to take a leave of absence has the club's "full support", Notts County said.

Scott, in his statement, said: “This past year has been a difficult one, both from a personal and professional perspective.

“I have undertaken therapy, which has helped, but I’ve reached a point where I feel I need to take more concerted steps to overcome the difficulties I’m facing.

“I look forward to returning to the club as soon as I can – and, while I would appreciate my privacy being respected at this time, in the future I intend to openly discuss the challenges I’ve faced in the hope that this will benefit others in similar situations.

“The support I’ve received from the club, my family and friends has been fantastic and I would like to take this opportunity to encourage anyone else who is struggling to please seek the help they need.”

Notts County said they fully supported Scott. Their board of directors in a statement said: “We take the mental health of all our players and staff very seriously and commend Cedwyn for his openness and proactiveness in seeking support.

“We look forward to welcoming Cedwyn back to the club when the time is right.”

Scott played for United in the 2020/21 season, making seven appearances for the Blues after joining from non-league club Hebburn Town.

He later played for Gateshead before moving to Notts County in 2022. He was a substitute for the Magpies in their recent 2-0 win at Brunton Park.
