Charlie Wyke was taken to hospital for X-rays on the ankle injury that saw him stretchered off in Carlisle United’s defeat to Cheltenham Town.

The Blues are waiting for confirmation of the extent of the injury which at first look appeared serious.

Wyke, who had come off the bench at the start of the second half, was on the pitch for less than 15 minutes when he was hurt in a challenge from visiting midfielder Luke Young.

The 31-year-old is now at risk of a length lay-off but head coach Mike Williamson said the Blues would await the details.

“We know it’s nasty, he’s gone to hospital, he needs to get X-rays and scans to see the extent.

“It was very tough to see but we will wait and see how severe it is.”

Wyke had just returned to action after a recent illness as he came off the bench midway through Carlisle’s 1-0 defeat at Brunton Park.

After the challenge, players immediately signalled that the forward needed urgent attention, with physios and medical personnel quickly coming to Wyke’s aid.

After several minutes of treatment he was carried off to an ovation from supporters.

Williamson added that he was “devastated for Charlie, for the outcome of that and for his family.

“For him as a person, how hard he’s fought in his career and what he’s been through, and also coming back from illness to coming on the pitch [in this game].

“In the changing room, you can see how much he cares, rallying the boys, and he single-handedly wanted to turn this round.”
