Carlisle United’s relegation odds have been further cut in light of the Blues’ ongoing League Two struggles.
But the Cumbrians are still given a better chance of survival by bookies that some better-placed rivals.
United, previously 6/1 with Betfair to go down, are now 7/2 with the same bookmaker.
That sees them fifth favourites for the drop despite their current position of second-bottom, four points adrift of safety and in miserable form that has brought just two points from their last seven league games.
The same bookie has bottom side Morecambe as odds-on favourites to go down with a price of 8/11. The Shrimps are a point below Carlisle.
Also with shorter relegation odds than the Cumbrians are Harrogate Town, Newport County and Accrington Stanley.
Harrogate and Newport, 17th and 14th respectively, are priced 9/4 with Betfair.
Accrington, who sit 20th, are 10/3.
BoyleSports offer even longer odds for Carlisle to go down, with a price of 4/1.
SkyBet and BetVictor are less convinced of their survival potential and price the Blues 5/2 to suffer a second consecutive relegation.
Carlisle are 5/1 with SkyBet to finish bottom of the table, Morecambe 3/2 favourites.
United’s pre-season promotion ambitions are now, it’s safe to say, a distant dream given their current predicament.
This is reflected in a promotion price of 150/1 with Betfair for the Blues to go up.
The Cumbrians are now 40/1 to make the play-offs, and are now as long as 8/1 (William Hill) even to finish in the top half of the table.
United are trying to avert the serious risk of a second straight relegation – something they have suffered only once before.
That came in the 1985/86 and 1986/87 seasons, when the Cumbrians crashed from the old Division Two to Division Four in consecutive campaigns.
Carlisle almost suffered the drop in back-to-back terms again in the late 1990s, only to be saved from that fate by a certain Jimmy Glass.
