Former Carlisle United goalkeeper Jökull Andrésson has left Reading permanently.

The League One club have announced that the 23-year-old, who was on loan at Brunton Park last season, has departed.

Reading say a mutual agreement has been reached over the termination of Andrésson's contract.

It ends a seven-year spell on the Royals books during which Andrésson has made a series of loan moves but no appearances for his parent club.

He has most recently been with Icelandic side Afturelding, the club where he had come through the academy ranks before joining Reading in 2017.

Andrésson was one of four goalkeepers to play in Carlisle's first team last season.

After being signed by Paul Simpson on a season-long loan, initially as Tomas Holy's understudy, he came into the side after a month of the campaign and made six League One appearances.

But a mistake and red card in the 2-0 defeat to Wycombe Wanderers saw Andrésson lose his place again, and he made just one more Blues outing, in the Papa John's Trophy against Nottingham Forest Under-21s.

His time at Brunton Park was also affected by two shoulder injuries, as Simpson turned to Holy, Gabe Breeze and then January signing Harry Lewis for the first team keeper slot.

Before his time at Carlisle, Andrésson had been on loan with Exeter City in three separate spells, Morecambe twice and Stevenage.

"Jökull leaves the Royals after seven years, with the very best wishes from everyone at the club," a Reading statement said.
