Carlisle United are in reserve action today when they take on Burnley in the Central League Cup.

The Blues make the trip to the Championship club for their second game in this season's competition.

It is expected that the Cumbrians will field a young side against the Clarets' Under-21s.

The game is being held at the Burnley Training Centre (Barnfield).

United's team is likely to be largely comprised of youth team players.

The Cumbrians' previous game in the reserve cup saw a young side beaten 5-0 by Blackburn Rovers.

United had been due to face Morecambe in the competition last Tuesday but that game did not take place, with the Blues in FA Youth Cup first round action against Altrincham two days later.

Should Mike Williamson and his coaches opt to give game time to any of their professionals who have seen little or no game time in recent weeks then the likes of Jude Smith could figure.

First-team players who have either been on the bench or out of the squad on recent matchdays include Jack Ellis and Jack Robinson. Youth team players who figured in the Blackburn game included Freddie O'Donoghue, Dan Hopper and Hayden Atkinson.

For Andy Farrell's Burnley it is their first game in a Central League Cup group that also includes Barrow.

And it sees the Clarets start the defence of a trophy that they won in the 2023/24 campaign when they defeated Derby County 3-2 in May's final. The hosts' Under-21s have won their last seven games this campaign.

The game is free for supporters to attend, and kicks off at 1pm.
