Harrison Biggins looks set to make a quick return to action for Carlisle United this weekend – with Ben Williams also close to a comeback.

The Blues duo have both trained this week in the build-up to Saturday's trip to Salford City.

Midfielder Biggins missed last weekend’s FA Cup defeat to Wigan Athletic with a calf problem but the issue appears to have eased quickly.

Left-sided defender Williams, meanwhile, has been out for the last two months with a knee injury but is also on the brink of returning.

Biggins’ return could be timely with fellow midfielder Ethan Robson ruled out of the next three games through suspension.

“Biggo trained [on Wednesday] and, pending any reactions, he should be fit for selection,” said Williamson.

“It was one of those where he finished the [Cheltenham Town] game, he reported it the next day and it wasn't a significant issue, but you could never tell how long something takes to settle down.

“But it settled down quite quickly. He missed last weekend – he’s trained, hasn't done the full session, but enough to hopefully he'll be all right on Friday.”

Williamson said a late fitness test may be needed to assess Biggins’ readiness to return.

Williams, who has been out since injuring his knee at Bradford City on September 7, is stepping up his own return.

“Ben's trained for a couple of days, so we'll assess the squad [for the weekend],” added the United head coach.

“He’s in a good place, although obviously needs a bit more training and a bit of sharpness.”

United have other players still on the sidelines, with Jordan Jones, Dylan McGeouch and Georgie Kelly continuing their returns from injuries.

McGeouch has spent some time away from the training ground this week – but for happy reasons.

“His wife has just given birth so he had a day or two off with that,” said Williamson. “We offer Dylan and his family our congratulations.

“Other than that, nothing has changed the trajectory of his time for return. He's still in bit-part training, so there's still a little bit more build-up [needed].”

Striker Charlie Wyke, meanwhile, has undergone surgery on the ankle injury which has ended his season. Williamson said the procedure was a success.

“He's had to be patient in terms of getting the surgery done, but he’s gone to the best surgeon that he could have and all has gone successful,” said Williamson.

“He's at home now recovering. The quicker he's back in and around the place with the lads, the better.”
