TWO major cricket leagues in Cumbria are holding talks to see if they can come together for the 2025 season.

The Eden Valley Cricket League (EVCL) and the Cumbria Cricket League (CCL) are looking into possibly integrating their two organisations.

This follows the massive failure that followed many months of consultations - facilitated by Cumbria Cricket - between the above leagues and the Westmorland League and member clubs with a view to forming a county-wide pyramid league structure for the whole of cricket in Cumbria.

The new talks between the EVCL and the CCL emerged at a recent meeting of the EVCL management committee and informal discussions have now been held involving officers of both leagues.

Draft proposals have now been released for initial presentation at the respective AGMs of the two leagues.

The EVCL held their annual meeting on Monday while the CCL meets on Saturday, November 23.

In the meantime, all clubs are being asked for their initial reaction to the proposal.

If, after consultation and further discussions between officers of both leagues it was felt it would be advantageous to go ahead, the move would need to go to extraordinary general meetings of the two leagues.

Chairman of the EVCL, Mike Mitchelson told his league’s AGM that initial talks with the CCL had been positive.

He said: "We will take a steer from our clubs.

"As we look at ways of providing as much competitive and meaningful cricket as possible."

Under the new proposal the respective leagues, while working together, would retain their individual autonomy.

The proposed new league structure would involve a total of 48 teams.
