Mike Williamson has saluted keeper Gabe Breeze for grabbing his chance – and Harry Lewis for how he’s reacted to being dropped.
Breeze, having impressed for Carlisle United in the FA Cup against Wigan, kept his place to face Salford City in the league.
The young Cumbrian kept a clean sheet as the Blues picked up a valuable 1-0 win.
Head coach Williamson admitted 20-year-old Breeze had earned his opportunity – and his display typified the attitude he needs from everyone in his squad.
“I thought he was fantastic last week – he really did take his opportunity,” said the Blues boss.
“And I think that's the mentality that every player and every member of staff has to have here, because it's got to be a selfless endeavour.
“The hardest part of being a footballer is not playing. You can also look at Barcs [matchwinner Ben Barclay] – his commitment and his professionalism has been brilliant ever since we've come in. He's so honest, hard-working, humble.”
Williamson’s selection of Breeze ended a 34-game run in the side for Lewis, which began with his debut against Oxford United in January following his move from Bradford City.

The 26-year-old now faces a battle to win his place back, with Breeze having also been saluted in song by the 1,366 travelling United fans at Salford.
United’s head coach said Lewis has responded well to his decision.
“He's already reacted [well] and been different class,” said Williamson.
“And knowing him from the short time I have been here, he's going to be pushing for his place back.
“And that's what we need. We need healthy competition. It needs to drive standards in everything we do – and that's healthy.”
Williamson could give Lewis a run-out in tomorrow’s Bristol Street Motors Trophy trip to Morecambe, with third-choice Jude Smith – yet to make an appearance since his summer move – another goalkeeping option.
