Mike Williamson says Luke Armstrong’s “resilience” and work ethic will help him get back on the goal trail at Carlisle United.

The frontman endured a frustrating night in front of goal at Morecambe on Tuesday, though Armstrong provided the cross for Ben Williams’ winner.

The record signing has two goals to his name from his 18 outings this season.

He is shouldering much of the attacking burden with Charlie Wyke out for the season and Georgie Kelly another frontman on the way back from the sidelines.

Armstrong, who could again be paired with Daniel Adu-Adjei at Bromley on Saturday, has the backing of head coach Williamson as he searches for more goals.

“I’ve known Luke for a long, long time,” said the Blues boss.

“I've played with him [at Gateshead], so I know his strengths and attributes. Resilience is right at the top of them.

“He's someone that will just keep going until the next day, with his engine, his desire to run and carry.

“With setbacks, he'll just keep going through them. It's nice for him to get the assist and support the win [at Morecambe].

“Ultimately, what we need individually and collectively is professional pride,” added Williamson, speaking to BBC Cumbria about the former Harrogate Town man.

“When we're not in a good period and we are struggling, and our quality might be lacking a little bit, [it is vital] to show up and to know what you're going to get.

“A bare minimum standard of hard work and giving everything, leaving nothing out there, gives you the best opportunity to turn your fortunes and then end up hitting the back of the net, which he has done for us and scored some important goals for us.

“But it's important that when players and teams are struggling, you just know you're going to turn up and get all-out hard work.”
