Carlisle United will face Plymouth Argyle in the third round of the FA Youth Cup.

The home tie against the Championship club was produced in this afternoon's draw.

It is the young Blues' reward for their impressive 1-0 victory at Barnsley in this week's second round tie, which followed a 4-1 extra-time win at Altrincham in round one.

Carlisle's encounter with Plymouth, whose first team are managed by Wayne Rooney, will see them playing in the third round for the first time since the 2020/21 season, when they eventually went out to Blackburn Rovers.

Plymouth's Under-18 team, managed by Jamie Lowry, compete in the South Youth Alliance League.

While United’s youth team includes players who have played in the first team this season, the same can be said of the young Pilgrims, for whom 16-year-old Tegan Finn recently made his senior debut under Rooney. Keeper Dan Holman has also been on the first team bench this campaign.

The third round game at Brunton Park must be played by December 14.

As in the senior FA Cup, Premier League and Championship clubs join the competition at the third round stage.

Holders Manchester City are at home to Crystal Palace.
