Mike Williamson has paid tribute to “selfless” skipper Sam Lavelle as Carlisle United bid to make more progress today.
The captain is in good form as well as playing through a broken nose for the Blues, who host Doncaster Rovers today (Brunton Park, 3pm).
Head coach Williamson says defender Lavelle - who has been wearing a protective mask since injuring his nose at Walsall last month - is a great example through the way he approaches things on and off the pitch.
He says the former Morecambe and Charlton Athletic man is giving absolutely everything to help the Blues improve their situation.
“I can't speak highly enough of Sam, he's a captain through and through,” said Williamson.
“From the first day we've come in, he’s shown such desire to really help and want to be a catalyst and drive and do whatever he possibly can.
“He’s a selfless human being as well. Even with a broken nose he's wanting to train, he's wanting to play, there's not a single ounce of doubt in terms of him coming back and playing with a fragile face, with his mask on.
“There was a close call last weekend, with the [Bromley] lad getting sent off [for an elbow on Lavelle].
“He's got through that, but I love the courage, the bravery he plays with, and when you ask him to do something, you can see wholeheartedly he gives everything – so for me he's a joy to work with.”
Lavelle will this afternoon lead the second-bottom Cumbrians into battle against a third-placed Doncaster side including former United midfielder Jordan Gibson.
Carlisle are seeking a first home win under Williamson and are eager to extend their three-game unbeaten run to boost their chances of escaping the League Two relegation zone.
After three away game in eight days the head coach is keen to put on an improved show for home supporters.
“The lads have covered the miles really well, we've shown some really good performances, and the next hurdle is creating that display at home in front of our home fans,” he added.
“The main thing is trying to make sure the result correlates with the performances we've been putting in.”
Aaron Hayden is set to return from illness today while Harrison Neal is back from suspension, with Georgie Kelly also a candidate to return to the squad after injury.
Ben Barclay serves a one-game ban with Terell Thomas also ruled out injured. Kadeem Harris is in line for a home debut.
Neal gives Williamson another midfield option after the head coach fielded wing-back Cameron Harper in the position at Bromley.
“Yeah, there are a few decisions to make,” said the Blues boss.
“I thought Cammy did really well, obviously Cal [Guy] really well as well.
“We've got that strength in depth and it will be something we look at.”
