Veteran former Carlisle United favourite Derek Asamoah has made more history – by playing in the same team as his son.

The 43-year-old lined up alongside 20-year-old Zayshaun for Haringey Borough on Saturday.

The club, who play in the Isthmian League North Division, said it was the first time a father and son duo had played for them in league football.

Asamoah senior was in the starting line-up for the game against Grays Athletic, and Zayshaun came off the bench in the 74th minute.

Derek later said it was a “proud moment” to share the pitch with his boy, even though Haringey went down to a 2-0 defeat.

It is the second time the former United striker has played in the same team as one of his sons.

Back in 2020 he lined up with Maleace for Cheshunt, with the pair also later playing together for New Salamis.

Maleace has since gone on to break into the EFL with Fleetwood Town and now Wigan Athletic.

Zayshaun has also previously been with Hullbridge Sports.

Derek was on United's books from 2014 to 2017, making 90 appearances and scoring 14 goals for Keith Curle's Blues.

His most famous strike came in 2015's League Cup clash with Liverpool at Anfield, when Asamoah equalised in front of the Kop in a 1-1 draw before the Cumbrians lost on penalties.

The Ghana international also played for Northampton Town, Mansfield Town, Lincoln City, Chester and Shrewsbury Town in England, whilst also turning out for teams in South Korea, Bulgaria, France and Scotland, as well as a host of English non-league clubs.
