Derval Green, Carlisle Cricket Club’s Jamaican professional, is set to leave Edenside.

The all-rounder has been selected by the West Indies for an inaugural T20 tournament in Canada.

It’s likely that Green will cross swords with disgraced Australian captain Steve Smith who has been named as a marquee player in Canada’s Twenty20 league.

Smith will join fellow international stars, including Chris Gayle, Andre Russell and Shahid Afridi in the six-team tournament, which begins on June 28.

The 29-year-old, who was suspended for 12 months in March for his role in the South African ball-tampering scandal, has been permitted to play domestic tournaments outside Australia by Cricket Australia.

Smith admitted having knowledge of the plan but failed to stop Cameron Bancroft using sandpaper to tamper with the ball on the third day of the third Test against South Africa.

Bancroft and Smith’s vice-captain David Warner, who have also been banned, will be allowed to play in Canada.

Also in the West Indies team is Justin Greaves, Carlisle’s overseas professional last season.

Carlisle are lying second in the North Lancs and Cumbria League’s Premier Division, 19 points behind leaders Cleator whom they shortly play twice in quick succession.

Skipper Marc Brown said: “Derval has played his part in our successful season so far, doing well with bat and ball.

“He will not be returning to the club, which means we have to recruit a replacement professional of similar standard.

“At this stage of the season, it is not going to be easy because we are obviously restricted in the players who will be available.

“We have been able to recruit a sub-pro for the next two weeks.

“South African Ernest Kemm, who is 27, [a former Cockermouth sub-pro] will be with us at Cockermouth tomorrow and will play against Dalton the following week.

“He’s the professional at Bacup for a second season.

“An opening left-hand bat, who captains Eastern Provinces in his native South Africa, he is also a left arm spinner.”

Green took 25 wickets in his short Edenside career at a strike rate of 24.64 and a best return of 5-28.

He scored 199 runs with a highest of 94 for an average of 28.43.

The 29-year-old helped Carlisle to second in the league; into the semi-final of the Higson Cup, sponsored by CN Group, and the County Cup quarter-final.

Global Twenty20 Canada will consists of six team, five representing Canadian cities – Edmonton Royals, Montreal Tigers, Toronto Nationals, Vancouver Knights and Winnipeg Hawks - with a sixth Cricket West Indies (CWI) representative team, consisting entirely of players from the Caribbean, as part of an official partnership with CWI.

The league will comprise 22 matches culminating in play-offs and the championship match on July 16.

The contests will take place at Maple Leaf Cricket Club, a cricket facility just north of Toronto that will be expanded to a capacity of 7,000 seats.

Elsewhere, Carlisle will also play host to the Edenfest music festival tomorrow and Cumbria’s NatWest Under-19s T20 Finals day on Sunday.
