Ty Proctor continued his stellar form with another double-figure display, while Mason Campton showed his old club what they have been missing with 12 points and a bonus, including a crucial tactical ride win which turned the meeting.
An entertaining opener saw Campton hit the front only to be passed by Nike Lunna, but the Comet held off former Workington captain Richard Lawson for second, while guest Chris Harris seemed way off the pace at the back.
Heat two was controversially awarded as a 3-3 as Rob Shuttleworth came off while Simon Lambert was in the lead, with question marks over whether Shuttleworth was clipped by Tom Perry.
Comets were on a 5-1 again in heat three but Maryport’s Dan Bewley slipped between Proctor and Matt Williamson to reduce it to a 4-2 which nudged the scores level at 9-9.
Heat four was rerun after referee Jim McGregor decided Thomas Jorgensen had moved at the start and the Comet couldn’t close the gap to Aaron Summers with Shuttleworth last as the Tigers moved back ahead with a 4-2.
A nightmare heat five saw Lunna pull back after getting a flyer but the Tiger had no such problems in the rerun, following Lawson home for an away 5-1.
Harris and Campton were steady behind Summers from the gate in heat six to prevent the gap widening, but heat seven brought another Glasgow 5-1 as Jorgensen was again penalised at the start and couldn’t catch Richie Worrall or Bewley after starting 15 metres back.
Ten points down at home, Comets needed a huge result to give them a hope of getting back into the meeting and the responsibility fell to Campton.
Donning the black and white helmet, the Australian expertly saw off the challenge of Lunna with Lambert slotting into third for a 7-2 which gave the home side hope.
It was all Workington in the next two heats as first Proctor and Williamson then Campton and Harris combined for back-to-back 5-1s which put Comets in front for the first time on the night in a position which was almost unimaginable minutes earlier.
Having finally taken the lead, Workington needed to carry the momentum through to the end of the meeting and they just about did so in heat 11, with Jorgensen pushing Lawson hard all the way and Lambert hanging on ahead of Lunna to share the spoils.
Proctor gated and was gone in heat 12 but crafty riding from Worrall saw him drive Lambert out into the dirt to open the door for Perry as the away side earned another draw.
After looking like leaving empty-handed at the halfway point, Comets were now fully in control of the meeting as a 4-2 from Harris and Jorgensen in heat 13 put them five points up, with the latter sweeping past Summers for third to the delight of the home supporters.
Glasgow rallied to bite back immediately with a 4-2 of their own as Bewley wound it on for a cool victory and Williamson pipped Perry, leaving one heat in which Comets needed to avoid a Tigers 5-1 to make sure of the win
Harris was adjudged guilty of movement at the start and was duly pushed back 15 metres, leaving fans in blue and white with their hearts in their mouths.
They need not have worried as Harris thrived on the pressure, relentlessly attacking Summers before passing him on the third lap to wild cheers, with Proctor comfortable in second place to secure a memorable win.
