The uncertainty over Workington Comets’ future didn’t faze the riders as they beat Glasgow Tigers 47-43 in the League Cup semi-final second leg to end a disappointing season on a high.

Glasgow’s progression to the final was almost a formality after they took a 39-point lead from the first leg, but it was Workington who triumphed on Saturday night to restore some pride as they exited the competition.

Heat one was pulled back after Adam Roynon got a flyer and Richie Worrall charged to the front in the re-run, but Ricky Wells bullied him out of the way to take the flag, while Roynon pestered Lunna all the way round but couldn’t find a gap.

A strong ride from Matt Williamson saw him cruise to a win in heat two, while Campton saw off Danny Ayres’ advances for a 5-1 to put Comets ahead.

Theo Pijper couldn’t keep Rene Bach at bay in heat three but Roynon swooped to beat Summers into third and share the points.

Glasgow gated on a 5-1 in heat four but Vissing quickly slotted into second behind ex-Comet Richard Lawson to limit the away side to a 4-2, which levelled the scores on the night.

Campton bolted from the tapes and was gone in heat five but Pijper ended up stranded behind Worrall and Lunna for another draw.

Lawson was determined to beat Wells in heat six, with the Comets skipper pushing hard but unable to really close the gap, while Roynon was comfortable enough in third ahead of Garcia.

Bach drifted wide from the start in heat seven and Campton and Vissing slipped through, but the battling Dane shot up the inside of the latter and pipped Campton on the back straight to earn a draw.

Williamson and Roynon tried to force Lunna to the dirt in heat eight but it only allowed the Tiger to have the drive he needed to reach the front, while Ayres struggled at the back.

Lawson tried every line he could to get past Vissing in an entertaining duel in heat nine, eventually getting his man on the final lap for an away 4-2, with Garcia pipping Roynon to third.

A perfect start from Wells saw him clear off in heat 10, while a ride out of the top drawer from Roynon kept Bach in third for a Comets 5-1 to make it 31-29 to the home side.

A stylish ride from Worrall saw him win with ease in heat 11, but Vissing and Campton were steady behind him for another draw.

Summers finally got going in heat 12, winding it on ahead of Campton until his bike packed in on the last lap, while Williamson shrugged off Garcia for third as Comets bagged a 5-1.

Vissing emerged from the pack out of the first bend in the lead but Worrall had snatched it by the second bend and Lawson followed him through soon after for an away 5-1.

Eager to make up for a third place in his previous ride, Bach looked a different class in the penultimate heat ahead of Pijper and Campton for another draw.

Wells stole a march on Worrall and Lawson to lead from the first bend in the final heat and seemed to read the Tigers duo’s every move to take what, could yet prove to be, the last ever chequered flag taken by a Comets rider at Workington.
