one in five teens between twelve and eighteen will suffer with a decline in their mental health and suffer from a diagnosed mental health condition and this is quite common with anxiety, depression and often OCD. students that experience struggling mental health may see a decline in their motivation towards their education and studies, which can lead to lower exam results and may find themselves unable to cope in high pressure environments such as completing an exam or assessment, and as many students will sit their GCSE'S this may affect their motivation towards preparing themselves for them and as to how well they perform during them. Some students who experience a decline in mental health will have the opportunity to be moved to a smaller exam room where they aren't surrounded by as many people and may be offered extra time so they have more of an opportunity to do well than they might have had in a regular exam room.
it is common knowledge that the mental health crisis is increasing in the UK due to the amount of people who find it hard to pay bills, and afford housing, and that depression rates are higher among these lower income families rather than from homeowners and higher income families, which might make it harder for lower income children to have the resources for school and revision etc, and this likewise may result in a decline in their mental health.
1 in 4 people will experience a mental health condition of some kind each year in England. The UK was rated 20th of 27 EU countries on the mental wellbeing index- and we can imagine that this will likewise mean that students are not receiving the appropriate help for their mental health or education, and so 1 in 6 young people have experienced a major depressive episode and this is most commonly associated with anxiety and depression.
Another way that a student's education can be affected by mental health is because due to a student's mental health, they may find it difficult to socialise with their peers and might find they feel alone with no support from others, and most students would say that friendship and being supported by their peers makes their education and school life a much more positive experience that enables a support system due to their peers understanding what a student would experience and feel.
Student's might be able to be supported by teachers and their parents with their mental health by teachers and parents creating a positive and safe environment for students to retreat to when they need support, such as a mental wellbeing hub with SENCO professionals that can provide students with positive reinforcement and lend students a listening ear.
